New News
  • Randall Student Success Night is next Tuesday!!  Please join us--Tuesday, October 1st from 5:30-6:30 to visit the classroom and check out some of the literacy we have been working on.  There will be ice cream as a treat after your visit :)  We  hope to see you there.
  • Ask your 5th grade about the monarch butterflies....they are almost ready to start their migration!!
Oldie, but Goodies
  • It is Hispanic Heritage Month!  Ask your 5th grader what we have learned!!
Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class assessed some of our volume and multiplication strategy learning.
  • Next week we will work through Module 4 on some basic division strategies and assess that learning at the beginning of the week after the long weekend.
  • Unit 2 will be focused on fraction work!!!  Remember, fractions are FUN!!
  • Our September Number Corner will focus on making connections between numbers written as fractions and decimals and start our work with volume in tangible and strategic ways.
  • Our October Number Corner will focus on gathering, analyzing and making predictions on data we collect on a daily basis using carrots.  In addition, we will be observing viewpoints of 3-dimensional buildings and using our knowledge of volume and shapes to uncover the "mystery buildings"
Literacy this week
  • We are almost done with our first EL unit of the year based on Stories of Human Rights.  We have continued to read and discuss the book chapter by chapter.  Then we think about what we have read and make connections to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, find the "gist", define new vocabulary and summarize our learning in verbal and written communication.  This includes how to respond to questions using complete sentences, quoting accurately from a text and summarizing a text with supporting details.
  • Fair warning:  The amount of writing expected in the 5th grade curriculum jumps dramatically from 4th grade.  There are some growing pains with this jump and we are finding where there are holes we are hoping to fill with their writing skills.
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work on learning routines and purpose for our literacy time.  We are also working on building our stamina for independent reading and doing activities that support our literacy growth.
Science
  • Our first unit will be on Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
Why do we see stars at different times?
  • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why don't we see a lot of stars in daytime?
  • Our second chapter will focus on :  Why is the sun up sometimes and not at other times?
SELS/Health lessons
  • Giving positive "shout outs" to peers/staff
  • Where to find health information

New News
  • It is Hispanic Heritage Month!  Ask your 5th grader what we have learned!!
Oldie, but Goodies
  • Please make sure your 5th grader has headphones to use in class this year.
  • Food Service Menus can also be found at the following link - Menus
  • Here is our shameless plea to all parents/guardians.  We don't take many field trips during the year, but if things come up at the last minute and for the end of the year all day trip we really count on parents joining us.  If you think you might even consider this, please do the volunteer training now so we are not scrambling at the end of the year.  Here is the link to get going.  The training is good for only one year.  After that, you do need to re-apply, but it is a simple process after the first round of training.  Thank you!!  Volunteering Link
Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class moved on to our next module for math.  For this module we will be focusing on factors, multiples and the associative property of math.  Part of this process included our work with surface area and volume.
  • Students are quickly learning that those multiplication facts are really important this year and moving forward.  If your student is not fluent with these facts, this is something they can work on at home.  We appreciate the support!!
  • Next week we will move on to Module 3 which is more work with multiplication strategies.  In addition, we will review the first three modules and do part one of the Unit 1 assessment.  The following week we will focus on some basic division strategies and assess this topic separately.
  • Our Number Corner this month will focus on making connections between numbers written as fractions and decimals and start our work with volume in tangible and strategic ways.
Literacy this week
  • We are deep in our  first EL unit of the year based on Stories of Human Rights.  We spent quite a bit of time discussing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and how we can connect this to our text, Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan.
  • We will continue to work on finding the "gist" of each chapter, making connections to the UDHR, expressing our learning in verbal and written communication and how to respond to questions using complete sentences, quoting accurately from a text and summarizing a text with supporting details.
  • For ALL Block, we are working on learning routines and purpose for our literacy time.  We are also working on building our stamina for independent reading.

Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class continue to work in our first unit on Expressions, Equations and Volume.
  • This week we reviewed and worked with factors to find multiples and jumped right into volume.  Volume will continue to be a topic that is revisited frequently this year.  We also worked with some strategies to help us such as "doubling and halving"/
  • Next week we will continue with volume and more strategies to help us.
  • Our Number Corner this month will focus on making connections between numbers written as fractions and decimals and start our work with volume in tangible and strategic ways.
Literacy this week
  • We will be jumping right into our first EL unit of the year based on Stories of Human Rights this coming Monday.  We will be using a variety of texts.  Our main texts will be the book Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and an abridged version of  the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We will be focusing on finding the gist of the text and expressing our learning in verbal and written communication.
  • This week we previewed the learning and end projects for this unit.  We also started reading our book and focused on describing/understanding vocabulary words.  In addition, we spent a lot of time figuring out the "gist" of what we have read to check for comprehension.
  • For ALL Block, we are working on learning routines and purpose for our literacy time.  We are also learning how to work together in small groups and independently while meeting 5th grade expectations.
Science
  • Our first unit will be on Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:

Volunteer Process clarifications

 Volunteer Process

Before any volunteer begins their service, there are two steps to complete.

  1. Complete the Volunteer Application through App-Garden.

  2. Complete the Building and Student Safety training

There may be additional required training based on what the volunteer’s role is. Volunteers are classified into two authorization levels:

  • Level 1 Volunteers: May NOT work alone with students

  • Level 2 Volunteers: May work with students (field trips, classroom assistance, tutoring, etc)

More detailed information about the volunteer process can be found on the MMSD website by going to the volunteer page
