New News
  • Welcome back!!
  • Friday, December 20th the 5th Grade will be doing a Pajama Day!  If we earn our movie day from our November paws, we will also do a movie that afternoon.  We will keep the 5th graders posted on the status of the movie :)
Oldie, but Goodies
  • If your 5th grader is going to have a planned absence, you will need to fill out an online form. Please remember to email your 5th grader's teacher as well.  Thank you!
  • If you think you might want to join us on any of the second semester field trips, please consider completing the Level 2 volunteer training/re-enrolling your Level 2 status when you are contacted.  Every year we are in a scramble trying to families to complete the training in time.  Why stress?  Here is the information.
  • Interested in volunteering at Randall or chaperoning a field trip with your student's class? - start the process by visiting the
    Volunteering page at MMSD’s website.
Math
  • Last week we took the fraction section of our Interim Assessment #1.  There are two other sections that we will complete before Winter Break. These assessments will help us with our grading process at the end of the semester and to help guide our instruction moving forward.
  • In Unit 3, we  will finish up our decimal work this week.  Next week we will review and take the assessment for the decimal work in Unit 3, finish up our interim assessment sections and other winter assessments.  The week before break we will revisit and assess our division strategies again.  After Winter Break we will begin Unit 4!!
  • In Unit 4, we will be working on multiplication and division strategies that will lead us to using the multiplication algorithm and using multiplication to help us divide.
  • Our December Number Corner will be focused on reviewing and adding to our knowledge and understanding of quadrilaterals.  In addition, we will continue to collect, graph, organize and analyze data, but we will have another set of data.  We will be using student height and feet length!
  • Our January Number Corner will be focused on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions and decimals.  In addition, we will be analyzing and comparing patterns, graphing ordered pairs and writing expressions/equations to represent patterns,
Literacy this week
  • Last week we did some creative writing and it was fun to switch things up a bit.
  • This week we began Module 2.  We will be using a non-fiction narrative text called The Most Beautiful Roof in the World  by Kathryn Lasky.
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.
Science
  • Our second unit will be on Ecosystem Restoration as we answer the question: How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?

  • Our first chapter will focus on : Why aren't the jaguars and slots growing and thriving?
  • Our second chapter will focus on : Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?

SELS/Health lessons
  • Goal Setting
  • Randall Way Video for December is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom.  Our December goal is 1000 paws to try and earn a pajama day in January.
