No School on Monday, January 27th for grade reporting day for teachers
As a school, Randall is doing a "RESET" on our behavior expectations. Please talk to your 5th grader about how they are doing personally. Thanks!
Please make sure your 5th grader has warm outdoor clothing and/or let us know if you need help with this.
Oldie, but Goodies
Math
- This week in Unit 4, we strengthened our multiplication and division skills using a variety of strategies AND while making connections between fractions, decimals and whole numbers as multipliers and divisors.
- Next week we will connect our multiplication strategies with the algorithm and start the transition to this 5th grade standard.
- Our January Number Corner will be focused on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions and decimals. In addition, we will be analyzing and comparing patterns, graphing ordered pairs and writing expressions/equations to represent patterns,
Literacy this week
- This week we used began Module 2 Unit 2 in our EL curriculum. We began by talking about figurative language examples and why/how we use these in our writing.
- We explore some new texts that used figurative language and worked on explaining what we read.
- For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.
Science
- Our second unit will be on Ecosystem Restoration as we answer the question: How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?
- Our first chapter will focus on : Why aren't the jaguars and slots growing and thriving?
- Our second chapter will focus on : Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?
- Our third chapter will focus on : Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving in the soil?
Social Studies--Starting next week!!
- Even though our social studies is mainly embedded within our literacy learning, we will be taking a break from science starting next week (Week of January 27) to do some work around Black History Month. This will end with an author's tea (sharing time) about some books they will be reading by African American authors.
- Be on the "look out" for a Sign-Up Genius if you would be willing to donate some paper goods/treats/juice boxes.
- More info will be coming to you soon.
- We will engage in our second mini-unit on Native Americans after our next science unit.
SELS/Health lessons
- What Do I Stand For?
- Decisions,Substances and You!
- Randall Way Video for January is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom. We did NOT meet our December goal, so we are hoping that we can roll in a pajama day along with our stuffy/read in day in February if we meet our goal for January. Our January goal is 1,250 paws to try and earn a Stuffy/Read In Day in February.
