Oldie, but Goodies
Math
  • This week we continued with fraction by fraction multiplication, models to understand our thinking, and generalizations about products of fraction multiplication. 
  • Next week we will take our second Bridges Interim Assessment before we continue with Unit 5 Module 4.
  • Our March Number Corner will be focused on area of objects using multiplication of decimals.   In addition, each week we will be gathering data of pencil lengths, placing the data in a line plot, analyzing data and making predictions.
Literacy this week
  • This week we started Module 3 which is about athletes for social change.  Our text is Promises to Keep  written by Sharon Robinson.  The book is about her father, Jackie Robinson.
  • This week we explored the text, summarized parts of the book and started thinking about characteristics people possess for social change. 
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.  
Science--

Our third unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question: What happens when two substances are mixed together?

  • Our first chapter will focus on : Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?
  • Our second chapter will focus on : Why do some salad dressings have sediments and others do not?
  • Our third chapter will focus on : Why can salad dressing ingredients separate again after being mixed?

SELS/Health lessons
  • Advertising Healthy Routines
  • Randall Way Video for February is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom.  Our February goal is 1,100  paws to try and earn a Game Day in March.

  • In preparation for our student led conferences in April, we will be collecting "evidence of student work" for them to discuss with you. Therefore, you may not be seeing as much work coming home, but you will receive all of it at their conferences. Sign Up Genius for these conferences will come in early March.
Math
  • This week we started Unit 5.  This week was focused on multiplying fractions by fractions using models and strategies to solve story problems. 
  • Next week we will continue this work find area as well. 
  • Our February Number Corner will be focused on finding the area of objects using multiplication of fractions.  In addition, we will work with the metric system as we measure, convert milliliters to liters, record our findings, make predictions for liquid measurement.

  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.  
Social Studies
  • Students shared and made recommendations about the books they what they read over the past few weeks  during our Author's Tea today.

  • Valentine's Day will be on the same day as our Author's Tea. We will find time for the 5th grader's to pass out valentines to their peers. This is OPTIONAL. We just ask that if your 5th grader brings valentines that they bring one for everyone in the class. Your 5th grader's teacher will send a list of names if your kiddo would like to participate. Thanks!
  • Please update your emergency contact information!! We are sending home a form today that will give you three options on how to do this.

  • Please check your email or see separate post about our Black History Month project and Author's Tea Sign-up.

  • It looks like we are starting to deplete our Cheerios stash for snack time. If you are able and willing, we would appreciate your donations of Cheerios (no flavored kinds....just plain) or similar off brands. Thank you!!!
