Human Growth and Development Information for 5th Grade

Dear Families & Guardians,

It is the vision of the MMSD Health Education curriculum, in partnership with families and communities, that all students are empowered to reach their full potential as healthy and safe individuals. The Human Growth & Development (HGD) unit provides students with the knowledge, skills, and resources in the areas of understanding bodies, identity, healthy relationships & ally behavior, and personal safety. We are committed to providing standards-based, medically accurate, culturally-relevant, and inclusive HGD instruction for all students.

Lessons & Learning Targets

Students in 5th grade will take part in HGD lessons during 4th quarter that will address the topics listed below.

  • Gender Identity and Expression (Lesson 1)

  • Sexual Orientation and Identity (Lesson 1)

  • Puberty and Adolescent Development (Lesson 2)

  • Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology (Lesson 3)

  • Pregnancy and Reproduction (Lesson 3)

  • Consent and Healthy Relationships (Lesson 4)

  • Personal Safety & Interpersonal Violence (Lesson 4)

Sometimes students ask questions or bring up topics that are not addressed or that may be beyond the developmental scope of the learning targets. Best practice includes addressing questions in a developmentally appropriate way, which may include a scientific or medically accurate answer or students may be encouraged to discuss their question with a staff member outside of class or a family member/adult the student can trust.

Family Consent & Student Opt Out

If you have any questions or concerns about what your student will be learning, please talk with your student’s teacher or school nurse. If you prefer your student not participate in HGD instruction you will need to submit a written request (can be via email) to your student’s classroom teacher or school principal in advance, indicating what lessons you wish your student to opt out of. An alternative educational opportunity will be provided for your child during that time.
