New News

Oldie, but Goodies
  • Check out the separate post that shows the LAST 10 Days of Fifth Grade Fun!!
  • Permission slips for our last two field trips are due soon. Please try to return these as soon as possible.
  • Please consider joining us for our upcoming field trips as a chaperone.
  • Thursday, June 5th--All day field trip to Lake Kegonsa
Wednesday, June 11th-- 11:00 am-2:00 pm Vilas Park

In order for Thursday, June 5th to be a success, we need as many parent volunteers as possible.  More parents allow for smaller groups and flexibility for everyone.  If you are able, we would appreciate any help on June 5th.

In order for you to be a chaperone, you will need to be approved for Level 2 volunteering tasks which involves a background check.  I recognize this can be an inconvenience, but unless we have you on our Level 2 approved list, we can not allow you to join us........  start the process by visiting the
    Volunteering page at MMSD’s website.

Math
  • Unit 7 focus is on division of fractions and whole numbers. We are exploring different division strategies and with whole number, fractions and decimals.
  • This week we finished up some division work and then did some district assessments on Thursday and Friday.
  • Next week we will work with multiplying and dividing powers of 10.  After that we will look at division with decimals one more time, review and assess Unit 7.
  • After Unit 7 we will reflect on the areas of the 5th grade curriculum that might need a bit more review and that will take us to the end of the year :)
  • Our May Number Corner will be focused on ordered pairs/graphing skills and converting liquid measurement from customary units to metric units.
Literacy this week
  • This week we finished up any work on Unit 3 and began our end of year chapter book reading/projects!
  • We also took an district reading test this week.
  • Next week we will take a spelling/phonics assessment.

  • Whenever we can find some time in these past few weeks, we will be doing some map skills learning about the United States.
Science
Our fourth unit will be on Earth Systems:  We will work to answer the question: What can determine how much water is available for human use?

  • Our first chapter will focus on : Why is East Ferris running out of water while West Ferris is not?
  • Our second chapter will focus on : Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Our third chapter will focus on : Why is there more water vapor getting cold over West Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Our fourth chapter will focus on : Why is there more water vapor high up over West  Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Our fifth chapter will focus on : How can East Ferris turn wastewater into clean freshwater?

  • Randall Way Video for May is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom.  Our May goal is 1,100 paws by being an ALLY to try and earn a popsicle treat.
