New News
  • It was great to see so many faces on Tuesday night!  Enjoy your long weekend :)
Oldie, but Goodies
  • It is Hispanic Heritage Month!  Ask your 5th grader what we have learned!!
Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class work through Module 4 on some basic division strategies.  We plan to do a review on Monday and then assess that learning on Tuesday.
  • On Wednesday we will begin Unit 2 that will be focused on fraction work!!!  Remember, fractions are FUN!!
  • Our October Number Corner will focus on gathering, analyzing and making predictions on data we collect on a daily basis using carrots.  In addition, we will be observing viewpoints of 3-dimensional buildings and using our knowledge of volume and shapes to uncover the "mystery buildings"
Literacy this week
  • Wow!  We are already done with the first EL unit of the year based on Stories of Human Rights. This week we took an end of the unit assessment.  Next week we will start Unit 2.  We will begin the chapter by looking at models of character reaction paragraphs.  The next step is for the students to try writing these.  We will continue to work our way through the book as well.
  • Fair warning:  The amount of writing expected in the 5th grade curriculum jumps dramatically from 4th grade.  There are some growing pains with this jump and we are finding where there are holes we are hoping to fill with their writing skills.
  • For ALL Block, we will be working with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.
Science
  • Our first unit will be on Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
Why do we see stars at different times?
  • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why don't we see a lot of stars in daytime?
  • Our second chapter will focus on :  Why is the sun up sometimes and not at other times?
SELS/Health lessons
  • Intersectionality
  • Learning to be a critical consumer
  • Randall Way Video for October is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom. October goal is 1200 paws to try and earn an extra recess.
