Oldie, but Goodies

Math
  • This week we finally finished Unit 1 and started Unit 2!  We jumped into Unit 2 by using  clocks and money to help us to make equivalent fractions so that we can add and subtract them.  This is a continuation of our work that we did in September for Number Corner.  Fractions ore FUN!!!
  • Our October Number Corner will focus on gathering, analyzing and making predictions on data we collect on a daily basis using carrots.  In addition, we will be observing viewpoints of 3-dimensional buildings and using our knowledge of volume and shapes to uncover the "mystery buildings"
Literacy this week
  • The start of Module 1 Unit 2 has gone great!  We have continued reading the text while focusing our discussions and writing around how various characters are reacting to various events in the text.
  • When we create our character reaction paragraphs, we are inferring information, finding evidence to support our thinking, quoting accurately and writing structured and supportive paragraphs.
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.
Science
  • Our first unit will be on Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
Why do we see stars at different times?
  • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why don't we see a lot of stars in daytime?
  • Our second chapter will focus on :  Why is the sun up sometimes and not at other times?
  • Our third chapter will focus on :  Why do we see different stars at different times of the year?
SELS/Health lessons
  • Understanding skin color
  • My identities
  • Randall Way Video for October is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom. October goal is 1200 paws to try and earn an extra recess.
