Math
  • This week we reviewed modules 1-3 and took a unit test for Unit 2.  We will still have one more module to complete next week , but that work is not being assessed at this point. 
  • Our November Number Corner will focus on identifying and classifying triangles, coordinate grids and ordered pairs and working with metric conversions!!  (Short month, but very busy.)
  • Our December Number Corner will be focused on reviewing and adding to our knowledge and understanding of quadrilaterals.  In addition, we will continue to collect, graph, organize and analyze data, but we will have another set of data.  We will be using student height and feet length!  
  • Looking for work for your 5th grader to do at home?  Your classroom teacher sent an email with an attachment.  This is optional as Randall has a no homework policy.  Thanks! 
Literacy this week
  • This week we worked on our first literary essay! Ask your child to show you what they have done. 
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.  
Science 
We will continue with our second unit in science the week of November 18th. Our next unit will be Ecosystem Restoration.
  • Our second unit will be on Ecosystem Restoration as we answer the question: How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?

  • Our first chapter will focus on : Why aren't the jaguars and slots growing and thriving?

Social Studies
  • We are using a text called Mountain Wolf Woman-A Ho-Chunk Girlhood by Diane Holliday.
  • We will be reading, engaging in discussion, working with vocabulary and various activities to try and gain a deeper understanding of the Ho-Chunk nation.
  • We will be in this unit for 3 weeks.

Math
  • This week worked to find equivalent fractions to compare and order their value, we took another "checkpoint" on adding and subtracting fractions.
  • Next week we will continue this work, review modules 1-3 and take a unit test for Unit 2.  We will still have one more module to complete the week after, but that work is not being assessed at this point. 
  • Our October Number Corner will focus on gathering, analyzing and making predictions on data we collect on a daily basis using carrots.  In addition, we will be observing viewpoints of 3-dimensional buildings and using our knowledge of volume and shapes to uncover the "mystery buildings".

Literacy this week
  • This week we read finished our mentor text!  Students also took a mid-unit assessment.  They were asked to reread a scene from the story, answer some comprehension questions, write a reaction paragraph and analyze a metaphor used in the story.  Wow! Luckily we have spent the past few weeks preparing for this.  
  • The next project we worked on was a 2-Voice poem.
  • After that, we will dig in and start to think about how the analyze and prepare to write our first literary essay of the year.  
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.  
Science 
  • Our first unit will be on Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
Why do we see stars at different times?
  • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why don't we see a lot of stars in daytime?
  • Our second chapter will focus on :  Why is the sun up sometimes and not at other times?
  • Our third chapter will focus on :  Why do we see different stars at different times of the year?
  • Our fourth chapter will focus on: How can we investigate why we see different stars on different nights?
We will continue with our second unit in science the week of November 18th. Our next unit will be Ecosystem Restoration.

Social Studies

Math
  • This week we worked with money and clock faces to help us understand fractions.  We also started to think about finding fractions of whole numbers (IE--1/4 of 36).  We did a visual representation this week called the River Trail.  Ask your math student about it.
  • Next week we will return to equivalent fractions and how we can use them to compare portions with different denominators. 
  • Our October Number Corner will focus on gathering, analyzing and making predictions on data we collect on a daily basis using carrots.  In addition, we will be observing viewpoints of 3-dimensional buildings and using our knowledge of volume and shapes to uncover the "mystery buildings".
Literacy this week
  • This week we read  more chapters and wrote more paragraphs.  Everyone seems to be improving their writing skills with these activities.
  • When we create our character reaction paragraphs, we are inferring information, finding evidence to support our thinking,quoting accurately and writing structured and supportive paragraphs.   
  • Next week we will look at what a 2-Voice poem is and how we can create this using our text.

  • This week we finally finished Unit 1 and started Unit 2!  We jumped into Unit 2 by using  clocks and money to help us to make equivalent fractions so that we can add and subtract them.  This is a continuation of our work that we did in September for Number Corner.  Fractions ore FUN!!!

  • It is Hispanic Heritage Month!  Ask your 5th grader what we have learned!!
Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class work through Module 4 on some basic division strategies.  We plan to do a review on Monday and then assess that learning on Tuesday. 
  • On Wednesday we will begin Unit 2 that will be focused on fraction work!!!  Remember, fractions are FUN!!

  • Wow!  We are already done with the first EL unit of the year based on Stories of Human Rights. This week we took an end of the unit assessment.  Next week we will start Unit 2.  We will begin the chapter by looking at models of character reaction paragraphs.  The next step is for the students to try writing these.  We will continue to work our way through the book as well.  
  • Fair warning:  The amount of writing expected in the 5th grade curriculum jumps dramatically from 4th grade.  There are some growing pains with this jump and we are finding where there are holes we are hoping to fill with their writing skills.
