Forward Exam Information

 Dear Randall Families,

Each year, Wisconsin students in grades 3-8, and 10, participate in the state’s Forward Exam. Schools across the state must select a date from March 18 through April 26, 2024 to give the test. Our school is scheduled to take the Forward Exam after Spring Break.

The Forward Exam measures knowledge and skills students should have for their grade level. The Exam tests students in the areas of English language arts (ELA); mathematics in grades 3-8; science in grades 4 and 8; and social studies in grades 4, 8, and 10. One or more subtests may be administered daily during our selected time frame. The results of these tests will be used to help school staff make determinations regarding curriculum, placement, and services to best support students.

Student performance on the assessment will not affect their grades. Please encourage students to take the test seriously, do the best they can, get a good night’s rest prior to the exam, and eat breakfast at school. Students not in school on testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window.

State assessments, including the Forward Exam, are required by both State (Wis. Stat. § 118.30) and Federal (ESSA-Every Student Succeeds Act) Law. Additionally, the Forward Exam is given in-person, with no virtual/remote options available. Students in Madison Promise will receive additional information about taking the test in-person.

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has created a Forward Exam Information for Families brochure, which gives more information about the assessment. (Spanish version of brochure; Hmong version of brochure). Additionally, if you have any questions regarding the state assessment system or specific assessments, please contact Tim Peterson, MMSD Director of Assessment, at tpeterson2@madison.k12.wi.us

As always, thank you for your ongoing support and partnership,

  • Hello families of Strings students,

As we get closer to the Big Event, I wanted to remind you of details:

All 5th and 6th grade Strings players in the West attendance area will be playing in this huge and impressive orchestra camp! I understand that students are busy and can have conflicts. I hope that your child can experience this terrific culmination of their hard work.

    Reminder of dates and times:

    • Drop off: Saturday, March 15th - arrive for tuning at 3:00. Violins and violas will be dropped off and picked up on Ash Street at the Welcome Center. Cellos and Basses will be dropped off and picked up on Regent Street at the Athletic Entrance. I highly suggest parking your car and walking your student to the door, and picking them up the same way. There will be 100's of families and cars - traffic congestion will be an issue and it would probably be less stressful to park and walk - let's plan on beautiful weather!

Here is a link to the entrance maps. There will be many volunteers and signs to help your student find the correct entrance (follow the crowds with instrument cases) and more volunteers once they are inside the high school.

The performance will finish around 5:00. Please park your car and walk to the drop off/pick up site for your student and wait for them there. They will be exiting the building around 5:10pm.

    • There is no dress code for the camp, but I encourage students to dress for success. I discourage high heels due to climbing the bleachers and going up and down stairs.
    • Please do not send valuables with your students.
    • Bass players will need to bring their bass and bow from home.
    • I will not be available on Saturday to get any instruments locked inside a building, so please make sure your student brings their instrument home by Friday at the latest.

Thank you for reading to the end! Please contact me if you have questions (include your child's school and classroom teacher in the email). I will stay until every child is picked up. You can reach me at (608)285-2125 if you need to get a hold of me.

This is going to be great!

Human Growth and Development Information for 5th Grade

Dear Families & Guardians,

It is the vision of the MMSD Health Education curriculum, in partnership with families and communities, that all students are empowered to reach their full potential as healthy and safe individuals. The Human Growth & Development (HGD) unit provides students with the knowledge, skills, and resources in the areas of understanding bodies, identity, healthy relationships & ally behavior, and personal safety. We are committed to providing standards-based, medically accurate, culturally-relevant, and inclusive HGD instruction for all students.

Lessons & Learning Targets

Students in 5th grade will take part in HGD lessons during 4th quarter that will address the topics listed below.

  • Gender Identity and Expression (Lesson 1)

  • Sexual Orientation and Identity (Lesson 1)

  • Puberty and Adolescent Development (Lesson 2)

  • Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology (Lesson 3)

  • Pregnancy and Reproduction (Lesson 3)

  • Consent and Healthy Relationships (Lesson 4)

  • Personal Safety & Interpersonal Violence (Lesson 4)

Sometimes students ask questions or bring up topics that are not addressed or that may be beyond the developmental scope of the learning targets. Best practice includes addressing questions in a developmentally appropriate way, which may include a scientific or medically accurate answer or students may be encouraged to discuss their question with a staff member outside of class or a family member/adult the student can trust.

Family Consent & Student Opt Out

If you have any questions or concerns about what your student will be learning, please talk with your student’s teacher or school nurse. If you prefer your student not participate in HGD instruction you will need to submit a written request (can be via email) to your student’s classroom teacher or school principal in advance, indicating what lessons you wish your student to opt out of. An alternative educational opportunity will be provided for your child during that time.
